Memorial Fund
The "Mitten Tree" Memorial Fund will help dyslexic students in need of financial assistance to attend L.A.M.P. Micro-School in Charleston, Maine, or will help them acquire the assistive technology they need to have equal access to information to succeed academically.
Martha's Story
This fund was created in memory of MARTHA BREAU. Martha loved the children at L.A.M.P. Micro-School even though she never personally met them. She followed them on their private Facebook page, commented on their photos and activities and enjoyed hearing lots of stories about how they were doing in school. Martha battled cancer for many years, and she so often wanted to sponsor a child to be able to attend the school who otherwise could not because of financial reasons. Martha understood that school could be hard if you learn differently, as she was a "hands-on" learner too. With her medical needs, it was just not possible to be a sponsor, so instead she showed her love to the children by hand-knitting each student mittens every year. The children were so blessed, and when they read the book, “The Mitten Tree,” they all thought about Mrs. Breau in Florida, and the wonderful mittens she would send to them. If Martha knew something special about them, she would put that thought into her gift. She would take time to label each pair with the child's name to make sure they knew they were just for them. She would look at their coat colors on Facebook and one year, knowing we had a student that loved grasshoppers, she put a plastic one inside his pair of mittens to surprise him! She left a legacy of kindness and compassion for our students, and we wish for her memory to continue for years to come. Martha went home to be with the Lord on March 22, 2023 and will be missed by so many.
